The US House passed a bill (H.R. 3388) that would effect ensuring future deployment and research in vehicle evolution, i.e. highly automated vehicles. The US Senate is considering a similar bill (S.1885).

The House bill would require the USDOT to determine the most cost effective method and terminology for informing consumers about capabilities and limitations of highly or partially automated vehicles. Also to insure that SAE terminology is used. After research is complete a rule making procedure for manufacturers will follow. S.1885 would prohibit states from enacting laws/regulations related to such vehicles. Also; Expedite resolution of conflicts with standards, testing, exemptions, inoperative controls, levels of automation, reports/evaluations, rule making, committees, education, safety and law enforcement issues, and cyber security.
